The Hoosiers have achieved their highest ranking in the poll since 1967.
Indiana football is officially a top-5 team in the nation.
The Hoosiers rose from No. 8 to No. 5 on Sunday following a home win over unranked Michigan. Only Penn State, Texas, Ohio State and Oregon are ahead of Indiana. They boast an undefeated 10-0 record and are the only top-5 team aside from Oregon without a loss on the year.
The highest Indiana got during its top-10 season in 2020 was No. 7, achieved in the last two weeks of that year’s regular season.
Whatever is being said of Curt Cignetti’s one year program turnaround nationally, it isn’t enough. What’s happening in Bloomington is historic and nearly unprecedented for what the program has been in modern times.
Schedule grips or not, it’s extremely difficult to win ten football games in a row. Eventually, most teams drop one to an opponent they should beat, as much of the top-10 has. Indiana just hasn’t.
Cignetti’s “I win. Google me.” line continues to age like fine wine.
