McDermott has hit his stride with the Blue Jays. Would he be interested in making the jump to Indiana?
Greg McDermott has spent the past five seasons in something of a golden age for his tenure at Creighton.
He’s led the Blue Jays for solidly over a decade at this point and guided the program through a transition from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big East. It took time for Creighton to find its footing, but it’s done that and then some at this point.
Does that make McDermott a legitimate candidate for the Indiana job? And would he want it?
His name has already ended up on a few national lists and hot boards, it’s probably worth a discussion at the very least if the program is truly trying to go after a proven winner this time around.
McDermott offers that. Creighton has made each of the past four NCAA Tournaments and would’ve made the cancelled 2020 dance with one of the country’s very best offenses.
He would, in all likelihood, provide a firm answer to the fanbase’s longstanding desire for a modern, watchable offensive system. The Blue Jays haven’t just won, they’ve been a really fun watch under McDermott with some really strong shooting teams mixed in.
Combine a dominant big man in Ryan Kalkbrenner with that shooting ability and you have a recipe for great spacing and roster construction that just makes sense.
On top of all that, McDermott’s teams have been stout on the defensive end of the court as well with the lowest rated defense of the past five years being 32nd in the country, which can be attributed to Kalkbrenner among other factors.
But, again, would McDermott want the gig?
Creighton has become a great high-major program under his watch. He built that place after mainstay Dana Altman left for Oregon and, again, has been in Omaha for over ten years at this point.
He was reportedly offered the Ohio State job last year only to end up staying with Creighton. Would Indiana prove enticing?
