Game Notes
No. 25 Indiana (0-0, 0-0 Big Ten) lost Mackenzie Holmes, the program’s all-time leading scorer, and Sara Scalia, one of the nation’s best 3-point shooters, to graduation after last season. Who replaces them in the starting lineup alongside returning guards Yarden Garzon (Jr.), Chloe Moore-McNeil (Gr.), and Sydney Parrish (Gr.) is the most pressing question heading into opening night.
Like most early season noncon games in the Teri Moren era, expect lots of subbing as the coaching staff tries to figure out who fits where. This year’s bench is the deepest Indiana’s ever had and most rotation roles are up for grabs.
Brown (0-0, 0-0 Ivy) went 16-11 overall and 7-7 in Ivy League play last year. The Bears finished the regular season tied for fourth in the conference but missed out on postseason play after losing a tiebreaker to Penn. Brown was picked to finish fifth in the Ivy Preseason poll.
Last season was Brown’s best under fourth-year head coach Monique LeBlanc. The Bears’ record has improved each year under LeBlanc and a winning Ivy campaign would be their first since 2005-06.
Brown returns four starters from a season ago but, like Indiana, need to replace their top scorer. Graduate guard Kyla Jones transferred to Northwestern after averaging 17.1 points per game last season. It’s a shame the Ivies do not allow fifth-year players.
Indiana’s been tested by Princeton enough in recent years to know the Ivy is a decent basketball league. If the Hoosiers play their game, however, they shouldn’t have any problems here.
