Game Notes
No. 25 Indiana (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) played Harvard’s conference rival Brown in its season opener Monday and downed the Bears, 82-60 in Bloomington.
Graduate guard Sydney Parrish was one of four Hoosiers to score in double figures with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double. Transfers Shay Ciezki (Jr., G, 7pts, +29) and Karoline Striplin (Sr., F, 17 pts, 5 reb) were the other notable standouts in their Indiana debuts.
Although Indiana led this one throughout, it wasn’t a totally dominating effort like most early noncon games under head coach Teri Moren. The Hoosiers allowed 11 3-pointers and Moren voiced her frustration with said stat postgame.
“It’s just unacceptable,” said Moren, before touching on multiple other defensive lapses. “It bothers me that we don’t have more pride. It bothers me that I have to go into halftime and have those conversations about being undisciplined. We left a shooter off the strong side. We never do that. We switched a guard and a 5 ball screen, we never do that. So it’s those little things. . . those are the things that are going to get your ass beat.”
Eight Hoosiers played 12-plus minutes while eleven of the available dozen appeared in the game. Sophomore guard Lenée Beaumont, who is dealing with a nagging knee injury, was the only active Hoosier who didn’t play.
Given the defensive lapses and injuries, it’ll be interesting to see if Moren tightens the rotation tomorrow night.
Harvard (1-0, 0-0 Ivy) also opened its season with a win on Monday with a 71-58 home win over UMass. Junior guard Gabby Anderson led the Crimson with 20 points in that one.
Harvard is seeking its 18th-straight .500 or better season in year three under head coach Carrie Moore. Moore’s squad was picked to finish third in the Ivy preseason poll and received one first-place vote.
Two-time All-Ivy first-teamer Harmoni Turner runs the Crimson offense. The senior guard was the league’s second-leading scorer (19.3 ppg) last year and led Harvard in points, assists, and steals. Turner registered five steals, four assists, and 13 points off 5-for-20 (.250) shooting Monday.
With so many new faces, Indiana is still figuring out how to play together. Moren’s frustration with the defense is understandable but not dissimilar to how she felt after the Stanford loss last year. It was now-graduate guard Chloe Moore-McNeil who galvanized the team by calling their previous performance “soft” then… expect the leader to be the one who gets Indiana right again tomorrow.
