Whitmer will replace the outgoing Tino Sunseri, who was recently hired as the new offensive coordinator at UCLA. Sunseri will remain with the Hoosiers during the College Football Playoff.
Before his time with the Falcons, Whitmer was an offensive quality control coach with the Los Angeles Chargers assisting quarterbacks, including former NFL Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert, in week-to-week preparation.
Whitmer’s college coaching experience includes roles as a graduate assistant at both Ohio State and Clemson, working with Justin Fields in the former role. He previously played quarterback himself for UConn and Illinois.
Our read
Whitmer just screams Cignetti hire. Indiana’s head coach has made more than a few hires during his time leading programs and few have led him astray. With Cignetti himself being a former quarterbacks specialist, this one may have gotten some extra care,
Most Cignetti assistants are young, talented up-and-comers in the coaching ranks. That was Sunseri years ago, and that label fits much of Indiana’s current staff including coordinators Mike Shanahan and Bryant Haines.
This appears to be a solid hire, all things considered. He’ll probably need to build up more of a recruiting record after years spent at the NFL level but learning under Cignetti will do wonders in that department.
