The Hoosiers are likely to have a host of options for the spot.
With ESPN’s College Gameday coming to Bloomington for Indiana vs. Washington this Saturday, Hoosier fans are abuzz with questions given its the first time the city has played host to the show.
Each show comes with a celebrity guest picker, usually someone close to the school, city or program. Who could it be for Indiana? Let’s look at some ideas:
Mark Cuban
This one’s obvious. Cuban, a legendary graduate of the renowned Kelley School of Business, is probably Indiana’s most visible alumnus.
The former majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks gained his fame through a rise to wealth that took him from Bloomington college apartments to the sidelines of Mavs games as the most present governor in the NBA.
Lilly King
On a lengthy list of Hoosier Olympians, King’s accomplishments for the cream and crimson along with Team USA put her around the top.
One of the most storied athletes to ever don the candystripes in Bloomington, King competed in her final Olympic Games this past summer, winning one last gold medal on her way out.
Obviously she’s been in the news recently, is a national figure, and is a former athlete. That’s way more than enough to earn the nod.
Joe Buck
Joe Buck has narrated countless memorable moments and plays for just about as many teams over the years from NFL football to MLB baseball.
He’s with ESPN now, manning the Monday Night Football booth with Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman at his side. The two have exchanged banter about Indiana football this season, particularly after Buck’s Hoosiers blasted Aikman’s UCLA Bruins in the Rose Bowl.
Buck is technically not an alumnus. Though he attended school in Bloomington, he did not earn a degree and instead went directly into broadcasting. Being an ESPN employee could make things that much easier for the network to get him to appear on Gameday.
Kyle Schwarber
Probably Indiana’s most notable athlete competing in the professional ranks, Schwarber currently stars for the Philadelphia Phillies but will be remembered forever in Bloomington for both his exploits as a Hoosier and bringing a long awaited world series title to Indiana’s contingent of Chicago Cubs fans.
Unfortunately for Schwarbs, the Phillies are no longer in the postseason. That does, however, mean he may be available for a trip back to Bloomington for an appearance on College Gameday.
Victor Oladipo
Another former Hoosier athlete, Oladipo has appeared in Bloomington a few times now since his departure years ago, most recently to take in Indiana women’s basketball’s bout with Iowa at Assembly Hall.
Oladipo, like Buck, is an ESPN employee, having been hired by the network as an NBA analyst recently as his playing career has drawn to a close.
Dark Horses
These are candidates that are famous and associated with the university or Bloomington, but might be a longshot to get the nod.
John Mellencamp
It would be fitting and Mellencamp would absolutely be on the above list had he not just appeared on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff this past weekend. ESPN will probably try to go with someone new.
Suzanne Collins
Well, she wrote one of the most talked about novels/series of the 2010s in the Hunger Games and has a new book/film on the way soon. She’s an alumnus, so truly who knows.
Kate Mulgrew
Okay, hear me out. Just a maybe but definitely not going to happen. In Star Trek’s canon, Bloomington is the hometown of Kathryn Janeway, captain of the USS Voyager and probably the closest thing you’ll get to a protagonist in Star Trek: Voyager. Mulgrew portrayed her and has made appearances in Bloomington in the past.
