When it comes to the winningest college football programs, most of us have a pretty good idea of the historic teams that have helped shape the sport over the years.
And while some schools have more wins than others due to a number of factors, win percentage is key when listing out which universities have enjoyed the most success.
Over the weekend, 247Sports did just that and here’s what they found:
- Ohio State Buckeyes (.734)
- Michigan Wolverines (.734)
- Alabama Crimson Tide (.733)
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish (.730)
- Oklahoma Sooners (.725)
Both Michigan and OSU are tied for the best all-time winning percentage. With the Wolverines winning the most games in college football history and the Buckeyes going on an unparalleled 82-9 run Urban Meyer in the 2010s.
As Brad Crawford writes:
The Wolverines have more wins than any program in college football history and are now tied with their arch-rival in terms of overall percentage. Last season’s 15-0 mark that culminated with a national championship under Jim Harbaugh was record-setting. …
[Ryan] Day is 56-8 in five seasons, highlighted by a 39-3 mark against the Big Ten. Three-straight losses to Michigan, at least at the moment, define his tenure, however. Thanks to continued recruiting dominance and the product on the field matching the success off of it, Ohio State showed no signs of slowing down as one of the nation’s blue bloods at the top of this list and is one of the frontrunners to win the 2024 national title.
