The 6’1” 190 pounder from Greenville, Georgia, is ranked as a 4-Star with On3, but every other recruiting service has him as a 3-Star — including the 247 Composite.
Richardson had been committed to USF since June, but that was after he previously committed and decommitted from Georgia State. Over the last couple of months, the Georgia state champion in the 100 and 200 meter dash, not only was getting recruited by the Irish — the Alabama Crimson Tide and Mississippi State Bulldogs were also trying hard to flip Richardson.
There were 78 receivers drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft over the last five seasons. 29 of them (37.2%) had elite 100 or 200m track times. That kind of verified speed is important and Richardson checks that box emphatically.
While he’ll need time to develop as a receiver, Mike Brown knows a bit about developing raw athletes into NFL receivers. He was a quarterback who became an All-American receiver at Liberty and he developed freak athletes like Alec Pierce, Tre Tucker, and Tyler Scott into NFL Draft picks at Cincinnati.
Scrap, as he is called (which is awesome), is listed as an athlete on the recruiting services — but he’ll likely get a crack at wide receiver right off the bat in South Bend. Notre Dame has struggled to recruit elite receivers this cycle, so they went after elite speed. It’s a pretty good idea. Richardson is the 23rd commitment for this class which now represents 19 different states.
There really is no such thing as an 85 man scholarship limit anymore, but I will continue to list it as such.
Again — Notre Dame is having a recruiting problem at the receiver position. Instead of grabbing a random 3-Star possession receiver, they flipped a guy that’s winning Georgia state track titles. It’s a really nice addition to the class in my opinion.
