Mike Martin Joins Notre Dame as General Manager
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame Football has named experienced personnel executive Mike Martin as the program’s general manager. Martin joins the Irish after more than 20 years in scouting departments across the National Football League, including the past four seasons as director of scouting advancement for the Detroit Lions.
“Mike Martin is an innovative, forward-thinking, organized leader, who is also elite at talent evaluation,” said Notre Dame Dick Corbett head football coach Marcus Freeman. “He is a great communicator and has valuable experience in roster building and management, as he was a vital piece of enhancing and developing the Detroit Lions’ roster over the last few years. Additionally, his expertise in utilizing sports science and analytics will help us continue to elevate our program.”
During his four seasons with the Lions, Martin collaborated with the college and professional personnel staff to enhance the scouting and roster-building processes. In 2024, the Lions saw major success, ending the season with a 15-2 regular season record, breaking the single-season franchise record for wins.
It followed a 12-5 season for Detroit in 2023, then tying the preexisting record for season wins with 12. The 2023 season was the third season in team history to have multiple playoff games won, and the first time it occurred in a season for the franchise since 1957. The 2023 roster construction was also pivotal in helping Detroit clinch their first Division Championship since 1993 and advance to their first NFC Championship since 1991.
Prior to his time in Detroit, Martin worked with the Carolina Panthers as the southwest area scout from 2018-20. He also spent 11 seasons with the Houston Texans, starting as a college scout for eight seasons, moving to national scout for two seasons and finishing his time as the assistant director of college scouting.
His first full-time position in the NFL came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, serving as a pro personnel assistant, then a pro scout and later the southeast region and national combine scout over his four-year tenure. He began his NFL career as a Tennessee Titans intern in 2002.
Martin graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt in 2003, where he played defensive back for four seasons and was a finalist for the 2003 Male SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He earned his bachelor’s degree in human and organizational development studies, later earning a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Vanderbilt in 2003. He and his wife, Cari, have two children, Maddon and Malone.
