The Irish were blown out for the first time this season
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team went on the road to East Lansing on Friday and suffered their worst loss of the early season. The game started close but a flurry of goals at the end of the second period and through the third gave Michigan State an 8-3 win when the final horn was blown.
Game Summary
First Period
Notre Dame started the game strong and took the early lead just over a minute into the game. The puck cycled around the offensive zone before Michael Mastrodomenico took a shot from the left point. That shot was deflected in front and into the back of the net by Danny Nelson.

Michigan State took over the rest of the third period from there, outshooting the Irish 13-8 over the 20 minutes. They added two goals only about a minute apart late in the opening frame and led 2-1 at the break.
Second Period
The second period saw a lot of goal scoring action and all of it early on, with 5 goals scored in the first 10 minutes. Notre Dame scored first to tie the game at 2 and again it was Danny Nelson. A stretch pass from the defensive zone found Brennan Ali at the blue line. He quickly put a pass right in front of the net where Nelson was all alone and had the time to stop the puck and find the opening up high for the goal.

Michigan State took the lead again just a minute later and then there was a four minute lull before Notre Dame tied it for the second time. A trunover in the neutral zone was picked up by Jack Larrigan who carried it just over the blue line before finding Mastrodomenico on the left. He let a shot go from there that beat Trey Augustine to make it a 3-3 game.

The Spartans took control from there though scoring twice over the next two minutes to take the 5-3 lead into the second intermission.
Third Period
The third period was all Spartans, as Notre Dame was unable to keep the offensive pressure up while trailing. Michigan State scored three goals in the third for the 8-3 win and outshot Notre Dame over the final 20 minutes 19-6. Notre Dame starting goalie Owen Say was pulled from the game after the seventh goal.
