While most of the American sports viewing audience was glued to last night’s national title game between Purdue and UConn, former NFL wide receiver turned broadcaster Keyshawn Johnson was not having fun.
On Tuesday’s edition of Undisputed, Johnson complained that the game was “boring” and felt forced to watch it. He compared the experience to eating something he hates because he’s starved to death.
“That stuff was boring, Skip. That stuff we watched last night, you had to force yourself to watch it. It’s like, I’m starved to death and I really don’t want to eat this, but I’m gonna eat it because it’s there and I gotta eat,” Johnson said, via Awful Announcing.
Johnson explained that he had no interest in the game other than for purely analytical purposes and the Undisputed crew conceded that it might have been a direct result of all the attention the women’s NCAA Tournament had been receiving in the days leading up to it.
The game certainly became less interesting midway through the second half when UConn completely ran away with the game. But for the first half, neither team could get a double-digit lead over each other and they exchanged leads pretty frequently.
From a pure entertainment aspect, it’s hard to see why anyone who loves basketball wouldn’t be able to enjoy at least the first half.
One thing’s for sure: The audience didn’t find it boring. Over 12 million people tuned in – about the same number that we’ve seen in recent years. While not as big as the women’s mark, it’s clear that people still love seeing how March Madness truly ends.
