Head Coach Matt Painter and players speak to the media following their 80-45 victory over the Thundering Herd of Marshall
The Purdue Boilermakers took care of business in an 80-45 victory over Marshall in their return to Mackey Arena following their loss to Marquette on Tuesday night. The Boilers improved to 5-1 overall and won the 22nd consecutive home game against any opponent. Head Coach Matt painter went with the third different starting lineup in six games this season by inserting Myles Colvin and Cam Heide following their impressive run over the last several games.
Let’s hear from head coach Matt Painter, Myles Colvin, Cam Heide, and Trey Kaufman-Renn as they spoke to the media following the victory.
Purdue Head Coach Matt Painter:
Purdue’s head coach kept it pretty short today but was insightful on the decision surrounding the new starting lineup. Painter felt as though, after the first several games, that he had access to enough date to make a good determination on lineups and felt like this one is the best in multiple aspects. Moving Heide and Colvin into the lineup paid off immediately as the two combined for 26 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 0 turnovers.
“It allows us to be more functional offensively. I’ve yet to see a lineup that is that good from a rebounding standpoint. If we are going to struggle to rebound, let’s go be more efficient in other areas” Painter said. The offensive effectiveness likely puts more strain on opposing teams and the net gain from a possibility of losing some rebounding is a good move for Purdue. Besides, this is probably Purdue’s best offensive and defensive lineup outside of taking Loyer off the floor and getting CJ Cox in at the off guard position.
Painter seemed most pleased with the attention to detail his starters and mainstays had in not turning over the basketball and the improvement he saw from that Marquette game. “Our ability to shoot the basketball has to be in play and if its not then we have to be efficient in getting to the rim or the free throw line and be able to score. I thought coming off that game, more than anything, having a purpose and understanding who you are going against. Just because you drove the ball against one team and had success doesn’t mean you’ll be able to drive the ball versus the next opponent. I thought Marquette got us to speed up and make poor decisions.”
