Scrimmage? No, no, no… showcase!
For the first time under Coach Odom, the Purdue Boilermakers will take the field in front of the general public.
But this year’s Spring Scrimmage has been changed to a Spring Showcase. Why? Who knows!
But there is no reason to keep anything from last season, so I am all in on the change.
Hell, change it all. Get new logos, jerseys, pipe in new where to the practice complex if that fixes whatever happened under Ryan Walters.
Here are five questions for the Spring Showcase tomorrow.
1. What is a Spring Showcase in comparison to a Spring Scrimmage?
I mean, this had to be the first question, right? Is it essentially an open practice? Will there be any actual live scrimmage? Is it more of an interaction with fans?
Ok, ok, that is more than just one question, but I’m genuinely curious what it entails.
We will know at Noon tomorrow.
2. Who takes the first Quarterback reps with the “first team”?
Purdue brought in three transfer Quarterbacks after Odom was hired. So, who will be with the first team?
Easy way to tell is, who is handing the ball off to beloved Boilermaker Devin Mockobee, who is a lock as the starting running back.
The Portal opens again next week, so this doesn’t guarantee anything in terms of who the starter is week 1.
3. What will the style of play be on offense?
I think it is safe to assume it will be a spread offense with what sounds like a heavy emphasis on the run.
But will Purdue employ personnel groups with 2 tight ends, like an NFL type of spread offense? Or will it be more of three wide receivers and a tight end?
Burhenn suffered an injury last week, so I am curious if that changes how they attack the personnel groups.
4. Who is even on the defense?
It’s a legitimate question with turnover Coach Odom saw on that side of the ball.
Majority of the defense will be new faces to Boilermaker fans. Tony Grimes and Crew Wakely sound like the real deal in the secondary.
Mo Omonode is coming off of a back surgery, and it sounds like he has been out all of the Spring.
5. Will there be special teams aspects tomorrow?
Spencer Porath struggled last season, just like the rest of the team, there is hope he turns it around for the new staff.
Between he and new punter, Sam Dubwig, Purdue has a young combo at the kicker and punter positions.
