The Purdue Boilermakers saw their Big Ten Tournament run come to an end at the hands of the Wisconsin Badgers today. But for Purdue head coach Matt Painter, the real story of the day was the treatment that star center Zach Edey received.
Speaking to the media after their 76-75 loss in overtime, Painter was at his wit’s end in trying to figure out why Edey was receiving so much flack throughout the day. At the end, he said that he was struggling to figure out why Edey gets so much hate from others.
“I’ve never seen somebody so good get so much (expletive) for no reason. It blows my mind,” Painter said, via Sam King.
For college hoops fans who watched the games (and don’t like Purdue very much), the reason was the excessive amount of fouls that referees give in Edey’s favor along with “missed” calls on the former National Player of the Year.
“LOL.. Painter needs to watch the game. YOUR TEAM MADE 19 MORE FREE THROWS THAN BADGERS,” one user on X wrote.
“lol. The guy camps in the lane and fouls constantly,” another wrote.
“He never gets fouls Called on him. Purdue will go out early as usual. LEAST OVERALL NCAA SHIPS IN ALL THE B10,” a third declared.
Painter and Edey now head into the 2024 NCAA Tournament as a likely 1-seed – same as last year – but will hope to do better than bowing out at the hands of a 16-seed this time.
We’ll find out tomorrow.
