Tight end is one of the Indianapolis Colts’ biggest draft needs. With that said, selecting Tyler Warren in the 2025 NFL Draft would be the perfect move. The star out of Penn State is one of, if not the top, tight end prospects in the upcoming class.
This season, the Colts had five tight end ends on their roster: Kylen Granson, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree, Will Mallory, and Jelani Woods. Unfortunately, none of them are impact players. Woods has the potential to be a star but has struggled to stay healthy. The 2022 third-round pick has missed the past two seasons due to injury.
Granson led the group with 31 targets, 14 catches, and 182 yards this season. Alie-Cox and Ogletree were the only players at the position to record a receiving touchdown. Both players had one.
Again, the Colts are in dire need of a play-making tight end. And they should take Warren with the 14th overall pick if he’s still available.
Tyler Warren Would Be the Perfect Pick for the Colts in the 2025 NFL Draft
A Look at Warren’s Career
Tyler Warren attended Atlee High School in Mechanicsville, Virginia. He played football, basketball, and baseball. Warren, the school’s starting quarterback, passed for 1,149 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior. He also rushed for 677 yards and 10 touchdowns. Initially committing to play at Virginia Tech, he ultimately chose Penn State.
Warren only recorded 49 receptions during his first four years with the Nittany Lions. However, he broke out this season, emerging as one of the best tight ends in the country. The Virginia native caught 104 passes for 1,233 yards, and eight touchdowns. Warren also had 197 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. As a result, he won the John Mackey Award and was named Big Ten Tight End of the Year.
Why the Colts Need to Draft Him
Last year, the Colts reportedly tried to trade up and draft tight end Brock Bowers. Such a deal never materialized, though. Bowers wound up getting drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders 13th overall. The former Georgia Bulldog was extremely impressive this season, catching 112 passes for 1,194 yards and five touchdowns. He’ll likely be named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard couldn’t land Bowers. But maybe he can redeem himself if he drafts Tyler Warren this year. At 6’6” and 260 pounds, Warren possesses the ideal height and weight and is a high-level athlete. He serves as a great route runner and has a big catch radius. Plus, he’s an open-field threat who can create a lot of yards after the catch.
Quarterback Anthony Richardson is expected to start for the Colts next season. If that’s the case, he must be surrounded by as many offensive weapons as possible to succeed. Warren could team with wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce to give Indianapolis a quality group of pass-catchers.
Richardson has struggled mightily, completing just 47.7 percent of his passes this season. But having a good tight end like Warren to throw to could certainly make life easier for the young quarterback.
