The 2024 season was Harrison’s second with Indianapolis. In 2023, he saw 234 defensive snaps, most of which came at linebacker. However, this past season, he transitioned back to safety during training camp, playing both the strong and free safety roles over the summer as needed.
Harrison was initially released following roster cutdowns in late August and was then signed to the practice squad after Week 1. Then prior to Week 9, he was signed to the 53-man roster.
Harrison would play just three defensive snaps last season, but was a core special teams contributor, playing 197 snaps across five of the six different phases.
The safety position for the Colts is not only one where improved play is needed, but adding depth is a must as well. The only safeties under contract in 2025 at the moment are Nick Cross, Rodney Thomas, and Marcel Dabo.
Given the lack of players at this position group currently, I do think there is value in bringing Harrison back. For one, he’s versatile, able to play linebacker or safety and he’s shown he can be a core special teams contributor as well.
In addition to that, this is a signing that contract-wise would be around the league minimum. So it’s not going to impact the salary cap in any significant way.
All that said, I don’t know that Harrison makes the 53-man roster–we have to see how the rest of the safety room is built out–but at a minimum, for offseason programs and training camp, he provides depth at a position that needs it and on special teams, he can handle a few different roles, and he won’t break the bank.
Prediction: Colts re-sign Ronnie Harrison
