Over the weeks, we will be taking a closer look at potential free agent candidates for the Indianapolis Colts.
Next up, let’s take a look at LA Chargers’ safety Elijah Molden.
Molden was a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. With the Colts, he would immediately slide into the starting free safety role with Nick Cross continuing to handle the strong safety responsibilities.
Over the last two seasons, Molden has proven to be a very reliable tackler, missing only 13 of his 158 combined attempts, according to PFF.
He’s also coming off arguably his best season in coverage, allowing a career-low completion rate of 66%, just 9.6 yards per catch, while also coming away with three interceptions and two pass breakups. Quarterbacks would have a passer rating of just 44.8 when targeting him.
Under new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, we are going to see more Cover-1 looks from this Colts defense, so having a reliable deep centerfield safety on the back end will be vital and Molden can provide that presence.
Versatility is an important element in Anarumo’s scheme and while Molden may be best suited for the deep safety role, he has slot experience and a cornerback background.
In terms of the salary cap impact, Pro Football Focus is projecting that Molden lands a one-year deal worth just $4.5 million.
Molden did suffer a leg injury during the Chargers’ Week 17 matchup with New England.
With Anarumo’s scheme putting a lot on the plate of the safeties, having an experienced presence on the back end could help the Colts with this transition.
