The Indianapolis Colts are predicted to make a key free agent addition at a big position of need this offseason.
Pro Football Network recently selected one free agent that each team needs to sign this offseason. For the Colts, PFN chose to address the safety position by signing Tre’von Moehrig.
“Moehrig will likely not be a cheap option for the Colts, but his versatility alongside Nick Cross could make for a dynamic pairing in the defensive backfield,” wrote PFN. “Both are capable against the pass, but neither is a liability when tackling opponents. The experience of (Justin) Reid or (Harrison) Smith will be tempting, but Moehrig is the long-term play.”
Moehrig, a former second-round pick in 2021, has spent his first four NFL seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Throughout his career, Moehrig has been a reliable tackler and this past season, he was one of PFF’s highest-graded run defenders at the safety position.
Moehrig has generated five interceptions the last two seasons and has 17 pass breakups over his four seasons. He also held pass-catchers to a career-low 9.7 yards per catch in 2024.
Of note, the bulk of Moehrig’s snaps this past season came in the box, which is where the Colts’ Nick Cross primarily lined up. However, over his career, Moehrig has more time at free safety, which is likely where the Colts would want him to play.
The safety position is arguably the Colts’ biggest need. The play there has to improve, first and foremost, but depth is a concern as well, with only Cross, Rodney Thomas, and Marcel Dabo under contract in 2025.
Addressing the safety position may be a bigger priority for the Colts in free agency rather than the draft.
The reason I suggest that is because in Lou Anarumo’s scheme, a lot is put on the plate of the safety position with how important versatility and the ability to disguise coverages is. Experience on the back end can play an important role as the Colts transition to this new defense.
Pro Football Focus projects that Moehrig will earn a four-year, $60 million deal in free agency.
The Colts currently rank 17th in available salary cap space, but have the ability to make more room.
