At this time, there is at least one opening on the Indianapolis Colts coaching staff that still has to be filled by new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.
So far what we know about Anarumo’s defensive coaching staff is that he is bringing in James Bettcher to coach the linebackers and that the Colts will retain Charlie Partridge as the defensive line coach.
However, a role that has not yet been filled is the defensive backs coach. It was reported on January 10th that the team was moving on from Ron Milus, who had held that role under Gus Bradley since 2022.
One potential change that could come in this regard is that with the Bengals, Anarumo had a cornerbacks coach and a safeties coach–two separate coaches for each position rather than just one as the Colts had previously.
The coaches who held those two roles in Cincinnati, Charles Burks and Jordan Kovacs, are still listed on the Bengals team site as being apart of the defensive staff. So Anarumo may have to go with outside hires to fill the current opening in Indianapolis and we will have to see if he brings in two coaches for the secondary or just one.
As GM Chris Ballard said at his season-ending press conference, the Colts need better play out of the secondary. Ballard bringing in competition can certainly help with that, but Anarumo’s background as a defensive backs coach and his scheme can help with some of that heavy lifting as well.
