With the trade deadline having passed, ESPN began looking ahead to 2025 in order to identify the biggest positional need for each team and how they could go about filling that void. When it came to the Indianapolis Colts, the position selected isn’t a big surprise.
Aaron Schatz would select the cornerback position as the Colts’ biggest 2025 offseason need at this time.
This was considered a top need for the Colts coming into the 2024 offseason, but GM Chris Ballard chose to stay put at the position, banking on the development of their young players.
Entering the season, cornerback was one of the biggest question marks for the Colts. The good news is that the continued growth from Jaylon Jones, along with the emergence of Sam Womack, who was claimed on waivers during cutdowns, has helped provide added stability to this group.
With that said, help is still needed. The depth at cornerback remains razor thin with David Long as the only other boundary option on the 53-man roster.
In addition to that, the Colts are still allowing the sixth-most yards per pass attempt this season and the seventh-most passing yards per game.
As far as who could provide the Colts help in the secondary, if they want to explore options in free agency, ESPN notes that Indianapolis is currently projected to have $38.2 million in offseason cap space.
But when it comes to the draft, Jordan Reid identified Notre Dame’s Benjamin Morrison as a potential option in the draft.
“Before Morrison suffered a season-ending hip injury, he consistently proved to be one of the best corner prospects,” wrote Reid. “The 6-foot, 190-pounder is a technician with excellent feet and hips that help him make plays on the ball.”
Prior to Morrison’s injury, he had allowed only 12 receptions on 27 targets (44.4%) at 10.4 yards per catch with two pass breakups. In 2023, Morrison’s completion rate when targeted was 49 percent, along with recording three interceptions and eight pass breakups.
