The Indianapolis Colts have listed seven players inactive for their Week 11 matchup with the New York Jets.
DE Genard Avery
QB Sam Ehlinger
WR Anthony Gould
S Darren Hall
TE Will Mallory
OT Bernhard Raimann
G Josh Sills
On gamedays, teams are only permitted to have 48 players active. So with the usual 53-man roster plus two practice squad elevations, seven players had to be inactive.
Of note, EJ Speed, who was listed as questionable with a knee injury is available and active for this game.
With Bernhard Raimann out, Matt Goncalves will presumably get the start at left tackle again and will be tasked with containing Will McDonald, who ranks among the best in quarterback pressures this season.
Genard Avery and Sam Ehlinger being inactive has been the norm when the Colts are healthy along the defensive front and at quarterback.
What’s interesting is that both Anthony Gould and Will Mallory are inactive for this game. Throughout the season, it has mostly been one or the other has been out, but not both.
Given how little the Colts utilize four and five receiver sets, having a sixth receiver available isn’t necessary. But with Mallory out, who has averaged around 10-12 snaps per game, the Colts are going light at tight end. This perhaps had to be done because Indianapolis is carrying an extra linebacker with Liam Anderson now on the 53-man.
Josh Sills was elevated from the practice squad on Saturday. My guess is that was an insurance move in case Braden Smith, who was listed as questionable, couldn’t go.
Lastly, Darren Hall hasn’t even been with the Colts for two weeks yet. They claimed the safety off waivers prior to the Buffalo game when Ryan Kelly was placed on IR.
