The Indianapolis Colts must address the safety position. Pro Football Network believes the team will sign free agent Tre’von Morhrig this offseason.
“Moehrig will likely not be a cheap option for the Colts, but his versatility alongside Nick Cross could make for a dynamic pairing in the defensive backfield,” wrote Pro Football Network. “Both are capable against the pass, but neither is a liability when tackling opponents. The experience of (Justin) Reid or (Harrison) Smith will be tempting, but Moehrig is the long-term play.”
The Colts need a tight end. But the safety position is perhaps the team’s biggest weakness. So with that said, signing Tre’von Moehrig would be a wise decision for the team this offseason.
It Makes Sense for the Indianapolis Colts to Sign Tre’von Moehrig
Looking Back At His Career
Tre’von Moehrig played college football at TCU. During his time with the Horned Frogs, he was awarded the Jim Thorpe Award for being the nation’s best defensive back and was named to all seven All-American teams as a junior.
The Las Vegas Raiders later selected Moehrig in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He became the highest-drafted TCU safety in NFL draft history. Moehrig started all 17 games as a rookie in Las Vegas. He produced 55 combined tackles (36 solo), six pass deflections, and an interception that year. As a result, he was named to the PFWA NFL All-Rookie Team. Over the past two seasons, Moehrig has had a combined 187 tackles, five quarterback hits, five interceptions, and 18 passes defended.
Why the Colts Should Sign Him
Colts safety Julian Blackmon will become a free agent this spring. The former Utah star tested the free agent waters last offseason before ultimately re-signing with the Colts on a one-year deal.
If Blackmon leaves, drafting a safety like Georgia’s Malaki Starks could be an option. But signing Moehrig would be an ideal pickup as well. Moehrig has had a healthy career thus far with the Raiders. He has only missed four of his 68 games in Las Vegas. He’s great against the pass and is a solid tackler.
As Pro Football Network mentioned, Moehrig could team with Nick Cross to form a dynamic safety duo in Indy. Cross is coming off an outstanding 2024 season, totaling 146 tackles (eighth-most in the league), five passes defended, and three interceptions.
Indianapolis finished 24th in scoring defense and 29th in yards allowed during the 2024 season. While Tre’von Moerig, of course, wouldn’t fix the Colts’ secondary all by himself, he could certainly help improve the unit.
The Colts have a new defensive coordinator in Lou Anarumo, who replaced Gus Bradley. Anarumo will try to get the Colts’ struggling defense back on track. But for that to happen, he’ll need all the playmakers he can get. And that’s exactly what Tre’von Moehrig is.
Moehrig is projected to sign a three-year deal worth $45 million this spring. While that’s a good chunk of money, the Colts need to do whatever it takes to improve their secondary and try to end their playoff drought in 2025.
