The Indianapolis Colts were able to select Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell with the No. 52 pick in this year’s draft. Many analysts thought he’d go on Day 1, but some “character concerns” hurt his stock.
After the Colts selected Mitchell on Day 2, general manager Chris Ballard ripped those anonymous reports.
Not only did Ballard call out those reports, he told people to start attaching their names to those kind of comments – especially since they impact the lives of young men like Mitchell.
“I read some of the [expletive] that was said. I mean just the typical [expletive], excuse my language, our typical league,” Ballard said. “Unnamed sources, you know, bad interview, that’s such [expletive]. I mean it [expletive] is. It’s [expletive]. Put your name on it. We tear these young men down. These are 21, 22-year-old men and if people out there can tell me they’re perfect in their lives, it’s crap. It’s crap. This is a good kid. For those reports to come out, I said it last year, it’s [expletive]. I’m sorry. I apologize for the language. I don’t, but I do.”
Mitchell, on the other hand, admit that it was frustrating waiting for his name to be called. Nonetheless, he’s excited to get to work in Indianapolis.
“I don’t really know what other way to call it,” Mitchell said. “I’m excited to work, excited to get there. Be the best teammate I can be, be the best person and ultimately the best player I can be for the team. It’s been a long time coming.”
Last season, Mitchell hauled in 55 passes, for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns. He showed impressive skills down the stretch for the Longhorns.
Mitchell will join a wide receiver room in Indy that currently features Michael Pittman and Josh Downs.
