NFL insider mentions one potential GM candidate for Colts

January 1, 2025 by Colts Wire

In a recent edition of Sports Illustrated’s MMQB, Albert Breer dropped a little nugget about the Indianapolis Colts, mentioning that there are “at least murmurs” of front office shuffling potentially taking place this offseason.

Breer would also add, when appearing on the ‘Rich Eisen Show,’ that it does sound like GM is the bigger question mark for the Colts and not so much Shane Steichen and the head coaching role.

At this time, all of these discussions are hypothetical, but if the Colts were to move on from Chris Ballard, who might they look to bring in for the general manager role?

Breer would name-drop one possible candidate, highlighting Chicago’s assistant GM Ian Cunningham, who worked with Steichen when the two were in Philadelphia:

“Do they look at it and say, ‘okay Shane Steichen, you can bring in your own guy,’ do you bring in somebody maybe like Ian Cunningham from Chicago, who you were with in Philadelphia and we build it around the two of you,” said Breer. “I think there are a lot of those sorts of discussions happening right now.”

Before joining Ryan Poles and the Bears staff as assistant GM, Cunningham was with the Eagles from 2017-2021, holding three different titles during that span, which included Director of college scouting, Assistant director of player personnel, and then he was the Director of player personnel during his final season with the organization.

Cunningham’s time with the Eagles and Steichen’s overlapped during the 2021 season.

Before joining the Eagles, Cunningham worked within the Baltimore Ravens’ organization from 2008-2016.

Ultimately, before we can dive into all the GM options that may be out there for the Colts, we have to get through Week 18 and see if Jim Irsay decides to move on from Ballard. But for the time being, perhaps Cunningham is a name to monitor.
