The Indianapolis Colts could use another offensive weapon for Anthony Richardson, but Cooper Kupp just isn’t the answer. While the Los Angeles Rams star is one of the NFL’s best receivers, he has been bitten hard by the injury bug over the past few years. Recently, Kupp said the Rams plan to trade him this offseason:
“I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships,” Kupp wrote on X. “I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA. Still, if there’s one thing that I have learned over the years: there are so many things that are out of your control, but it is how you respond to these things that you will look back on and remember…”

It’ll be interesting to see where Kupp ends up this offseason. Perhaps a trade to the Green Bay Packers makes sense. He and quarterback Jordan Love could make an entertaining duo for sure. Teams like the Washington Commanders and Dallas Cowboys are also possible landing spots. The Colts, however, need to stay away from even thinking about an offer.
No, the Colts Shouldn’t Trade for Rams Wide Receiver Cooper Kupp
His Career Thus Far
The Rams drafted Kupp in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He was the seventh wide receiver drafted that year.
Kupp put together a spectacular 2021 campaign. He became the first player since 2005 (Steve Smith Jr.) to earn the receiving triple crown. Kupp led the league in receptions (145), receiving touchdowns (16), and receiving yards (1,947).
Also in 2021, Kupp beat out Colts running back Jonathan Taylor for the league’s Offensive Player of the Year Award. He was named first-team All-Pro and made his first Pro Bowl.
More importantly, though, Kupp helped Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and the Rams win Super Bowl LVI that season. Kupp was named MVP of the game after catching eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Kupp has failed to reach 850 yards in a season for the last three years, though. Injuries have taken a toll on the Eastern Washington product.
Why the Colts Shouldn’t Pursue a Cooper Kupp Trade
Again, Cooper Kupp is one of the best wide receivers in the league. However, he has battled injuries over the last few years. He played in all 17 games in 2021. Yet, he has missed 18 games since then. It’s always risky trading for someone who can’t stay healthy.
Besides, the Colts already have a solid wide receiver group. The unit is led by Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs and Alec Pierce. Adonai Mitchell is coming off a disappointing rookie year, but he can potentially be an impact player.
Plus, by trading for Kupp, the Colts would have to inherit his $20 million salary in 2025 ($7.5M roster bonus + $12.5M base) and $19.85M in 2026. It wouldn’t be wise to spend that money on someone who’s often injured.
