Former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis was tragically found dead on Monday at the age of 35.
Davis, a former first-round pick out of Illinois, played for three franchises from 2009-18, spending six years with the Indianapolis Colts from 2012-17.
Chuck Pagano, who was Davis’ head coach in Indianapolis, expressed his condolences on X/Twitter after news of the two-time Pro Bowler’s passing began spreading.
Devastating and Heartbreaking news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Davis family. It was an absolute honor and privilege being his coach in Indy. Great player but better person. Loved him like a son. RIP Vontae.
Davis was found at his grandmother’s home in Southwest Ranches, Florida. A cause of death has not been revealed yet, but police at the scene said no foul play was suspected, according to WSVN.com.
Davis began his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins, making the All-Rookie Team and spending three seasons in South Florida before moving on to the Colts.
With Indianapolis, Davis made back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2014-15. He signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills during the 2018 offseason, but suddenly retired at halftime of a Week 2 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, saying afterward that he “shouldn’t be out there anymore.”
The younger brother of former NFL star tight end Vernon Davis, Davis was sentenced to probation back in November for a DUI case.
