The Indianapolis Colts are at home to take on the Detroit Lions for their week twelve game, Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
Week eleven took our Colts to New Jersey to take on the New York Jets in what turned out to be Anthony Richardson’s best game as a professional (and probably the best game of his life if we’re being completely honest). Richardson was excellent throwing and made the most of his attempts to run the ball. Jonathan Taylor struggled to get much going on the ground as the young offensive line wasn’t able to get great movement, starting three rookies against a Jets defensive line that features Quinnen Williams.
This week things won’t get any easier against an elite Lions defense. In fact every aspect of this game is going to be much more difficult than it was for the Colts a week ago. And, realistically today shouldn’t look good for our Colts. The Lions have the potential to roll over most teams in the NFL and unfortunately for all of us the Colts just so happen to be of a similar quality to “most teams” in the league this year.
But there is some hope for today’s game! The Lions have yet to play a quarterback like Anthony Richardson. And while there aren’t many quarterbacks like Richardson, I mean a running quarterback. The closest to it would be Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals and I wouldn’t call him a running QB. So defending this style of offense isn’t something this Lions team has had to do. Will it matter? I don’t know, it could. But this is literally all of the hope I have for the Colts in today’s game. And when your hope hinges, completely, on an unfamiliar opponent being unfamiliar, well, that’s not a great sign.
Today I’m hoping for more progress from Anthony Richardson, even though I fully expect his numbers to be worse, maybe a lot worse, if he just doesn’t revert to the style of play we saw before he was benched for Joe Flacco, I will be a happy camper by the end of the game.
As always, go Colts.
